Meet the Horsfield
The Horsfield tortoise, also known as the Russian or Central Asian tortoise, comes from the dry steppes and hills of Central Asia. They're one of the smaller tortoise species, growing to around 12–20 cm (5–8 in) as adults, with females usually a little larger than males.
They're known for their docile, curious personalities and love to explore and dig, which makes them really rewarding to watch. Their compact size and herbivorous diet of leafy greens and weeds make them a popular choice for tortoise keepers.
With the right care, a Horsfield is a true companion for life: they commonly live for 50 years or more, so your little one could be part of the family for decades to come.

Care at a Glance
Warmth & Light
A warm basking spot of around 30–32°C with a cooler end of 22–25°C, plus good UVB lighting for healthy shell and bone growth.
Space to Roam
Horsfields are natural roamers and diggers, so they love a roomy enclosure with deep substrate to burrow in. Babies can start smaller and move up as they grow.
Simple, Leafy Diet
A varied, high-fibre diet of weeds and leafy greens such as dandelion, clover and plantain, with fresh water always available.
Full Setups Available
To make things easy, we can also provide heating, lighting and housing, right up to a complete setup, for an additional cost. Just ask and we'll put together what suits you and your new tortoise.
We'll go through a full setup and care guide with you, so you can feel confident from day one.
